Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey's situation remained very critical in an unnamed Durban hospital on Monday, according to his brother, Mark.

"It's worrying that Neil has had to be put on a respirator at times, but the doctors hope the damage is not further than his heart muscles," Mark said on Monday morning.

Tovey suffered a heart attack while training on Sunday afternoon and was rushed to hospital.

Safa Head of Communications Dominic Chimhavi released a statement late Sunday afternoon saying that Mark Tovey had confirmed the incident and that Neil was in critical condition and doctors were battling to stabilise him.

Safa President Dr Danny Jordaan said he was shocked to learn about the occurrence and wished Tovey a speedy recovery.
