London - Diego Maradona is planning a comeback, at the age of 53, for a team in Argentina’s regionalised fifth tier.

The 1986 World Cup winner, who last played in 1998, is expected to draw such a crowd that Deportivo Riestra plan to swap their 3 000-capacity stadium for the 43 000-plus home of champions San Lorenzo.

The Buenos Aires club are backed by Victor Stinfale, Maradona’s friend and legal representative. When asked to manage the team, Maradona replied: “I want to play.”

He is expected to play his first game on March 23 - and will wear the No 10 shirt.

Meanwhile, Maradona was reported as being furious that his fiancee of one week was flirting with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in Dubai, amid claims that 23-year-old Rocio Oliva tried to swap social network details.

A spokesman for De Gea said he had “never met or even heard of Mrs Maradona”. - Daily Mail
