Johannesburg – South Africa's Kevin Anderson progressed to the last 16 at the Australian Open in Melbourne, where he is likely to face Rafael Nadal.
Seeded 14th in the tournament, Anderson defeated Richard Gasquet of France 6-4, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (8/6) in the third round.
It was only the second time Anderson had beaten Gasquet in six meetings.
Gasquet, ranked 24th in the tournament and 28th in the world, reached his peak in 2007 when he was rated seventh on the ATP Tour.
Anderson reached a career-high 15th place when the rankings were released at the start of this tournament on Monday.
Born in Johannesburg and residing in Delray Beach, Florida, Anderson has reached the round-of-16 twice before in Melbourne –
in 2013 and 2014, losing to Tomas Berdych on both occasions.
He has only faced the world number three, Nadal, once before, in the 2010 Canadian Masters where he lost to the Spaniard 6-2 7-6
(7/6).
