Johannesburg – Following his run to the final at the Queens club on Sunday, South African Kevin Anderson is confident about his game with Wimbledon starting next week.

Anderson lost in the final of the Aegon Championships to Andy Murray of Scotland 6-3 6-4 on Sunday, and en route to the final dispatched French Open champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland.

“I can take a lot of confidence from last week,” said Anderson on Tuesday.

“I’ve always been confident on grass, it’s certainly quite a bit different [from other surfaces]. It’s probably not as well-suited for me as hard courts and clay courts, but there are parts of my game that I’ve been working on that I think are very effective on grass.”

Anderson at 203 centimetres tall has one of the best serves on Tour, and believed he could go far in the tournament with a serve-and-volley approach.

“The courts at Wimbledon are quite similar to the courts we just played at Queens. The serves don’t get up as much off grass, but if you’re hitting your spots the ball really does go through. I’ve been working at coming forward at the right times and being more aggressive. That [strategy] is definitely more suited to grass.”

Following his performance last week, Anderson reached a career high of 14th on the ATP singles rankings. It means he will be seeded inside the top 16 at Wimbledon, and will crucially avoid similar-seeded players until the later rounds of the draw. It means Anderson has a realistic chance to become the first South African to reach the quarterfinals since Wayne Ferreira in 1994.

“Reaching a new career-high ranking is something to be happy about and it comes off a really good week of tennis so that is something I am really happy about.

“I’m definitely looking forward to this tournament starting, I’ve been working really hard as I have over a number of years of constantly trying to find areas of my game I can improve on.

“With time you get good experience as I’ve made the fourth round at a few slams. I think it is something I can take into this Wimbledon.” - ANA
