Johannesburg – Kevin Anderson fought back from a set down to progress beyond the first round of the year's first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, but fellow South African Chanelle Scheepers went crashing out on Monday.

Anderson held his nerve against Italian Paulo Lorenzi, securing a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in the first round of the men's singles competition.

The SA men's number one will face Russian Andrey Kuznetsov in the second round.

Scheepers, the only other South African in the main draw for the tournament, went down 1-6, 2-6 against Czech world number 22 Klara Zakopalova in the opening round of the women's singles. – Sapa
