London – Andy Murray made an impressive start to his Wimbledon title defence as the third seed swept into the second round with a 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Belgium's David Goffin on Monday.

Murray is the first British man to defend the singles title at the All England Club for 77 years and he showed no signs of nerves against Goffin, brushing aside the world number 105 in 122 minutes to set up a clash with Slovenia's Blaz Rola.

With new coach Amelie Mauresmo watching from the players box, Murray was given a standing ovation as he walked onto Centre Court for the first time since his historic final victory over Novak Djokovic 12 months ago.

And the 27-year-old Scot never looked in danger of suffering a first round letdown as he hit 28 winners, served eight aces and went through the entire match without dropping serve. – Sapa-AFP
