Paris – Fifteenth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan has pulled out of his third-round match against Gilles Simon at the Paris Masters because of a recurrence of his right ankle injury.
Nishikori, who missed last week's Swiss Indoors with pain in his ankle, beat Benoit Paire of France in the second round to set up Thursday's match with Simon.
"I tried to play here but after the first match the pain became worse," Nishikori said. "It hurt last night when I was back at the hotel. I tried to warm up but I wasn't at 100 percent."
Nishikori won the Japan Open in Tokyo last month for his second career title, but then picked up the injury in the second round of the Shanghai Masters.
Simon will face either fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic or Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the quarterfinals.
"This morning I didn't feel very good," Simon said. "I don't really want to explain in detail where I'm hurting, but it was good he retired today because some days you feel ready and today I didn't." – Sapa-AP
