Warsaw – Defeated Wimbledon finalist and world number two Agnieszka Radwanska, one of Poland's highest-profile sports stars, is to carry her country's flag at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.
The Polish Olympic Committee made the announcement on Monday, two days after the 23-year-old Ä a Wimbledon junior champion in 2005 Ä lost 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to five-time title winner Serena
Williams.
Radwanska, the first Polish Grand Slam finalist for 73 years, is one of seven Poles competing in the Olympic tennis tournament.
Both she and her 21-year-old sister Urszula, who ranks 54th in the world, will compete in the singles.
They will also be linking up for the doubles tournament, with Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Alicja Rosolska forming the second Polish women's pair.
World number 68 Lukasz Kubot will compete in the men's singles.
Madrid Open doubles winners Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski -who are eighth and seventh respectively in the global doubles ranking -will represent Poland in their favored discipline. – Sapa-AFP
