Berlin – Serena Williams of the United States stayed top of the women's tennis rankings after beating number two Maria Sharapova in the final of the Madrid Masters.

The 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Sharapova Sunday ensured Williams remained top of the rankings released Monday by the WTA.

The American has 11,115 points, with Russian Sharapova on 10,690 and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus on 8,510.
