Durban - Thousands turned up at New Beach on Saturday, ready to party at Aquafest, a biannual dance and music festival featuring the best of local and international DJs.

With some wearing only bikinis and flip flops, the crowd danced until late last night.

The party started at noon and ended at midnight.

The festival, by Big Show Productions, is South Africa’s biggest beach party.

DJ sensation Celeste Siam from Thailand was the headline act, accompanied by more than 30 of South Africa’s finest, including DJ Fresh, Mark Stent, Dino Bravo and Euphonik.

“The event brings Durban to life. It’s nice to get together on the beach with so many who come to enjoy the music and have a good time,” said festival-goer Carmen Naidoo.

The event will be held in Durban again at the end of the year.

“This is the first one for the year and we already don’t want it to end. We had a ball and are looking forward to the next Aquafest. It’s great that international talent is added to the line-up,” said an enthusiastic Brian Harris, who was spotted enjoying the festivities.

But there’s more to look forward to. On Sunday the Unity Colour Festival takes place, also at New Beach, from noon to midnight. Tickets at the gate are R190 to R250.
