Bling out the colour

Marsala is the pantone colour of the year, blue and denim prints are in and if you are tired of the silver fixtures in your bathroom, it’s time to spruce things up with gold.

Expect to see a more sophisticated look this year with splashes of fun that incorporate gold hardware, natural textures, and a subtle mid-century modern undertone.

Yep, the international décor bible, Zillow Digs, has released its 2015 trends report.

Gold fixtures

“In 2015, homeowners will no longer be limited to silver or stainless steel fixtures and will feel free to mix and match finish colours or go bold with all gold,” claims the report.

So that means you can bling out your house exactly as you’ve always dreamed of doing in the New Year. We recommend that you do not over-do it as Donald Trump did in his bathrooms.

Go for a gold sink along with gold fixtures like taps or a gold shower head. If that is out of your budget, a gold-framed mirror should do the trick.

Bold wallpaper

Say goodbye to those plain white walls and say hello to some bold wallpaper.

Wallpaper is back in a big way and, according to the experts, consumers should expect to see an increase in available colours and textures in home stores because everyone’s dying to spice up their wall game.

From bold blue to a mix of yellow and white and pastels, you can have fun with the design of your wall but still keep it classy with wallpaper.

Blue accents

Blue will be the most popular accent colour for interior decorating, and we are happy it will be because it also happens to be the perfect complement to marsala.

“Pops of indigo blue or deep navy will become a stable in home design this year, as their deep natural hues become extra vibrant against warm-earth tones like marsala,” says Zillow Digs home design expert, Kerrie Kelly.

If you’re not sure how you feel about the navy-accent trend, start small by adding blue scatter cushions in your lounge or even to your patio. In the bedroom change it up by adding blue chairs or ottomans.

Mid-century modern elements

This throwback to the 1950s through to the 1970s includes the couch that you saw on that 1970s family comedy or even the dining table in the drama series is officially trendy this year.

Zillow Digs warns “while this trend will be popular, we advise homeowners to be careful as the trend is great for inspiration, but shouldn’t take over the house”.

Consequently, we think these are the best subtle ways to bring the 1970s to life in your home:

Colours: Beautiful indigo blue is making a splash in home décor and works with many different design styles. Much of the colour inspirations this year are drawn from nature, making designs feel comfortable and natural.

Floors: We’ll see a more relaxed outlook in carpets and area rugs with distressed and striated patterns. Hardwoods are getting more relaxed too with reclaimed looks. For vinyl, styles that look like wood are popular for 2015.

Cabinets: In cabinetry, convenience is the name of the game for the year. Clever and functional tools make busy lives a little bit easier. There are also more open concept cabinets and shelving available that show off beautiful dishes and accessories.

Lighting: Beauty and function combine in this year’s lighting trends. Outdoor lighting that accents architectural features is becoming more popular and will help highlight the beauty of a home’s exterior at night.
