Blood smears splattered the floor, a glass door forced off its hinges lay cracked and several windows bore bullet holes.

This was the horrific scene following an armed robbery at a Shell service station in Eikenhof early yesterday, which left three people injured.

A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was about to drive into the petrol station to fill up his car when he realised something was wrong.

“There were no attendants outside and I could see a glass door was off its hinges and cracked. I was a bit concerned, and that’s when I heard gunshots. I drove away immediately and watched from the other side of the road while trying to call the police and security.

“I saw three or four people run out of the broken door and get into a car - they sped away,” the man said.

He waited for the police to arrive and then went inside to see how he could help.

“There was blood all over the floor - it was really bad, it looked like people had been dragging themselves across the floor to hide or take cover.

“A man was lying bleeding profusely from his leg. The cashier looked like she was also bleeding quite badly. She was in shock, and crying,” he said.

The witness added that a third victim, who seemed to be a customer, looked semi-conscious and was also covered in blood. “I’ll never forget what I saw - it was like a horror movie. It will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

Mondeor police spokesperson Captain Nokulunga Dube confirmed the incident and said no arrests had yet been made.

“It’s believed that four suspects, armed with rifles, forced open the shop door and threatened the cashier,” he said. “They demanded that she open the till and give them money.

“The suspects also held up the petrol attendants, took their jackets and then wore them.”

Dube said the men opened fire on the cashier and two customers, and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and a cellphone. Those injured were rushed to hospital in moderate to serious condition.

“A case of business robbery has been opened and we are calling on anyone with information to come forward.”

The Shell Garage said it was not able to comment yet.
