Kevin Anderson returned to court six at Roland Garros yesterday afternoon, and claimed only his second win in the main draw at the clay-court Grand Slam.
The No 31 seed, whose match was postponed on Sunday due to bad light at 7-7 in the fifth set, eventually overcame Portugal’s Rui Machado 7-6, 6-7, 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 to set up a second round tie against Argentina’s Haroacio Zeballos.
Anderson had saved three match points when Machado served at 5-3 on Sunday night, and now moves into the second round for the second year in succession.
Chanelle Scheepers, South Africa’s sole representative in the women’s draw, overcame Laura Pous-Tio of Spain 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
Scheepers, who made it as far as the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2010, will next face Russian Nadia Petrova. Petrova has twice reached the semifinals in Paris.
