STATE-OF-THE-ART bus shelters are soon to replace Joburg’s steel and corrugated iron ones.
City of Joburg transport MMC Rehana Moosajee unveiled a model of the shelters yesterday.
The first phase of the project will see 60 units installed in the nine Joburg regions. A total of 140 shelters will be installed in the next two years.
The shelters, which were designed by Joburg-born designer Brian Steinhobel, will be paid for by selling advertising space on them.
Steinhobel said the material used was derived from the marine industry and had a lifespan of 30 years.
He said the shelters could not be dismantled and were spraypaint resistant.
There would be different sized shelters. In case of rain, up to 20 people could stand under a shelter.
All of them had wheelchair positions, and in time they would have USB electronic connections as well.
