CHINA is fast developing a taste for Cape wines and local exports to the country have taken off over the past five years.
The market is still small but has grown every year: in 2007, SA exported 1.2 million litres of wine to China, which grew to 4.3 million litres in 2011.
Although SA accounts for only 3 percent of the Chinese wine market, China has become one of the top 10 export destinations.
It appears that Chinese consumers like both the quality and the price of the country’s wines, according to officials who visited the Yantai International Wine Show in China this week.
Western Cape Agricultural MEC Gerrit van Rensburg said the new Chinese market was particularly important for SA wine producers as the European market was not growing.
