Courage on the line

What a dreadful dilemma faces Saudi Arabia’s woman athletes, who officially do not exist. Their government has agreed that they may compete in this year’s Olympic Games in London, but they fear that the price could be too high.

The problem is that these athletes, who train in secret, could be penalised if they do take part because the ultraconservative rulers may resent being pressured to do so by the West.

Until now the authorities have ignored their clandestine activities, but they fear a complete shutdown if they go to London for the Games, which begin this month.

Should any be brave enough to go, they deserve continued support when they return home.
