Curbing Eskom

President Jacob Zuma’s instruction to Eskom to find ways to curb price increases is a welcome step towards putting a brake on the most damaging of the “administrative” hikes that are looting the pockets of consumers.

Ruinous increases in the price of electricity as Eskom seeks to fund its building programme by fleecing existing consumers are by no means the only area where costs soar through no fault of the consumer, while leaving the victims with no way to limit the damage on their finances.

It is all very well to call for people to tighten their belts in tough economic times, but when Eskom is joined by municipalities who send rates and services bills soaring, then there is little the mugging victim can do about it.

Steadily impoverishing wage and salary earners is a guaranteed way to stifle economic growth.
