The wage negotiation season is upon us. I’m following the municipal wage negotiations with keen interest.
I’ve observed that the approach of the SA Local Government Association (Salga) is more adversarial than collaborative (this doesn’t put the interest of both negotiating parties at heart).
In the first round of negotiations Salga put a 4 percent wage increment on the table, and only moved 0.5 percent up. This proposed increment is less than the consumer price index.
Last year municipal workers received a mere 6.08 percent increment.
Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has stated that public servants should receive an annual increment of not more than 5 percent.
With its insulting wage increment proposal, the employer is giving labour no choice but to push for an industrial strike which will affect service delivery adversely.
