Two competitions for designers were held as part of this year’s Vodacom Durban July at the weekend.

After months of hard work and uncertainty, the winners of the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer and Fashion Challenge presented by LIPSY, LONDON were announced at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 5 July.

Entrants to both competitions were required to interpret and create an outfit based on the fashion theme for this year's Vodacom Durban July, ‘The Big Screen’.

Raceday presented one last chance for the 10 finalists to impress the panel of judges, made up of a team of stylish Invited Designers and fashion industry experts.

The Young Designer Award, one of the biggest and most supported design competitions, is aimed at emerging talent and was won by Sadie Bosworth.

The third year DUT students King Kong inspired ensemble, complete with a New York skyline and fighter plane fascinator, was an immediate favourite with the judges.

Daniel Paton’s 1930’s glam sci-fi creation took home the first prize for the Vodacom Durban July Fashion Challenge, a national fashion competition that looked for a fashionable and on-trend take on the raceday theme ‘The Big Screen’.

“I wanted to create something that was visually appealing and because I have entered before, I understood what the judges were looking for,” said Paton.

The elated designer is planning to use the prize money for his first collection at the Durban Fashion Fair coming up later this year.
