Once again the world’s trickiest legal problem is to be put to the test. Three British high court judges will be asked to condone assisted suicide.
Tony Nicklinson, a 58-year-old victim of locked-in syndrome who can move only his eyelids since having a stroke in 2005, will argue through his lawyer that he has a basic human right to be allowed to choose when to die. He wants a doctor to be permitted to help him do so without being prosecuted.
There must be sympathy for Nicklinson and others in a similar situation, whatever one’s beliefs, After all, those with enough money can travel to Switzerland and have their suffering ended with minimum fuss.
