Fashion winners at Durban July
Fashionistas were out in full force at the Vodacom Durban July, Africa’s biggest horse-racing event, held on Saturday.
Racegoers wore colourful creations inspired by this year’s ‘Big Screen’ theme.
A highlight of the day were the field fashion competitions.
The winner of the men's category of the Gold Circle Classic Racewear award, Nevadh Vandayan, was his own model for his 21st century feel ensemble and transformed the classic black and white suit into, “something with more a modern day feel.”
Vandayan hand-painted the delicate patterns on his jacket and, “looked at recent trends, which were sheer and shorts.”
Flamboyant fascinators and sizeable hats stole the show on raceday with Zandile Masondo as the winner of the Gold Circle Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator award for the second year running.
She decided to explore lighter colours for her headpieces compared to her darker hues that won the coveted title for her last year.
Marilyn Monroe was the inspiration behind Phindile Phungwayo’s winning design for Gold Circle Classic Racewear - Female competition.
Phungwayo had only entered the Vodacom Durban July fashion competition once before but her lacy beige outfit mirrored the glitz and glam of the ‘Big Screen’ that the judges were searching for.
The Gold Circle Most Striking Couple award went to Kireshen Chetty, who created an opulent and elegant Russian-looking outfit. Amazingly this was his third top three finish of the day having already claimed second and third place in the Gold Circle Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator competition.
Said Chetty: “'The ‘Big Screen’ was all about celebrating the different cultures of Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood and so I decided I wanted to celebrate Russian culture too!"
