Forget the two-horse race – Ramphele for president!

Comment on this story

The argument for having a woman as president need not go further as election time nears.

Dr Mamphela Ramphele’s eloquence during a recent conversation with Professor Jonathan Jansen was enough to convince the audience that they had to look no further to book her as a candidate for our fifth general election.

With the male list of hopefuls a “boring rerun”, Ramphele’s name will inject some colour in what is now clearly seen as a two-horse race for the presidency.

She will make her past political sisters, Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher and Indira Gandhi, and her contemporary, Joyce Banda, proud.

And had Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma not been elected chairwoman of the AU Commission, she, too, would have been in the running.
