LoverS of music, camping and the outdoors can barely contain their excitement with just a few days standing between them and Oppikoppi.

The annual three-day festival has become a highlight on the country’s music calendar and a fixture in youth culture, with about 20 000 people making the pilgrimage from all parts of the country to a farm in Northam, Limpopo.

The 22nd edition of the fest is themed “The Fantastic Mr VosVos” after Roald Dahl’s novel The Fantastic Mr Fox, a story about a cunning fox and his sticky finger.

Attendees can expect a line-up of more than 100 artists and DJs on six different stages. Among the local artists are BCUC, P.H.fat, Shortstraw, Francois van Coke, Nonku Phiri, The Parlotones, Desmond & the Tutus, and Okmalumkoolkat. The international acts include Gogol Bordello (US), The Curious Incident (UK), Livingston (UK) and The Circle View (US). Festival-goers can expect the weather to be compliant with their 72-hour party with temperatures peaking at around 23°C.

This year, the local artist being honoured is Johnny Clegg, and a tribute to him will be performed on Sunday.

Local band Taxi Violence say they’re driving a party bus to Oppikoppi where they’ll perform to the lucky fans on board.

“It’s going to be a fun ride up to Oppi on the Windhoek Bus. We plan to have a great time with all the fans and maybe even make some new friends. Maybe we’ll stop along the way and perform an unplugged set to get everyone into the swing of things.”

They added that fans can look forward to a surprise.

“We’re very excited to be performing on the Windhoek deck at this year’s Oppikoppi. We have played other stages before but we believe this is going to be something special because we’ll be performing as a five-piece band, which is something we haven’t done for some time now.”
