SOUTH African fighter Kaizer “The Hammer” Mabuza’s second trip to Russia was a disastrous one when he was brutally stopped in four rounds by the unbeaten Russian star Khabib Allakh-verdiev to surrender his IBO junior welterweight crown in Moscow on Wednesday.
Hoping to repeat his heroics of 2009 when he travelled to Ukraine to face that countrys then unbeaten prospect Serhiy Fedchenko and against all odds inflicted the first defeat on him, Mabuza had no chance this time around against the fire-spitting Russian southpaw.
Mabuza got the first taste of what was to transpire in the very first round when Allakhverdiev dropped him.
Mabuza beat the count and appeared to have recovered fully when the 29-year-old floored him hard again in the fourth round.
Going for the kill, Allakh-verdiev finished the job when he put Mabuza down again forcing the referee to stop the fight.
The defeat was the ninth for Mabuza in a professional record of 36 bouts with three draws and should ring alarm bells about his status as the world class fighter in the talent-rich junior welterweight division.
His promoter Rodney Berman, who was already planning big things for his charge, expressed his disappointment at the sudden cha-nge of events.
“I had big plans for Mabuza but maybe our guys are not as good as we think they are,” he said.
Allakhverdiev has now added another scalp of a big name opponent in his 17 fight unbeaten ledger with eight knockouts following his victory over former unified world lightweight champion Nate Campbell.
