l May 2012: Thabo Siavhe, a South African employee of Denel on a demining mission, was returned home after being held captive in Khartoum, Sudan, for more than three weeks. He was arrested by Sudanese soldiers along the disputed border with South Sudan on suspicion of working for the South’s military.
l November 2011: Steven McGowan, of dual British and South African nationality, and a Swedish tourist were taken hostage in Timbuktu, Mali. They are still being held there.
l April 2010: Four South African peacekeepers from a joint UN-AU mission are captured in Darfur, Sudan. They were released two weeks later.
l March 2010: SuperSport sound engineer Nick Greyling was held captive in Nigeria. He was released and returned to SA a week later.
l June 2007: Twelve hostages, including South African Duplooy Smit, were released in Nigeria. They were captured on May 25, 2007.
