AN OFFICIAL of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has died in a hail of bullets outside his home, prompting the party to appeal for calm among its members.
Councillor Wandile Wonderboy Mkhize, 34, was gunned down outside the gate of his home in Manaba near Margate on the South Coast on Saturday night.
It was the third such killing since March last year.
A friend who was with him at the time was shot several times and was fighting for his life in hospital.
“We are worried about the assassination of ANC leaders that is becoming a trend,” said party provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala.
Police spokesman Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the Hawks were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
The two men were walking in the road when a car pulled up and shots were fired at them. The motive was un-known.
Mkhize, a councillor, served on the executive committee of the Hibiscus Coast municipality, where he was the party’s chief whip and chairman of the governance and corporate services portfolio committee.
