Oregon: Two men flying matching lawn chairs suspended by helium-filled party balloons over central Oregon last weekend said on Tuesday they were floating along peacefully at 4 300m when thunderstorms grabbed control of their craft.
Iraqi adventurer Fareed Lafta and lawn chair ballooning veteran Kent Couch were trying to fly from Couch’s petrol station in Bend, Oregon, to Montana as a warm-up for a future flight over Iraq.
They were buffeted by the storm for an hour and a half.
“It was really, really dangerous for us,” Couch said. “The best solution was to get down.”
They landed in a newly mown hay field, about 60km east of their starting point, with their home-made craft floating off and coming to rest on a ranch about 8km away. – Sapa-AP
