The article on the SMS threat against me for my work in Yeoville Bellevue refers (“Man targeted for trying to clean up neighbourhood”, July 24) refers.
While I am happy with the general message, I would like to correct one thing. I and the people and organisations I work with cannot “close down illegal spaza shops, liquor outlets and other businesses”. This can be done only by the authorities.
All we can do is put pressure on the City of Joburg and the SAPS to enforce the law, especially to stop people breaking the law in the first place.
By the same token, we cannot “restore law and order”. I wish we could, but we don’t have the power or authority to do so. Once again, it is the responsibility of the council and the police to do that.
But as community activists we can encourage and we can assist through working in street committees, the community police forum, etc.
