ROBERT Vadra is the son-in-law of Sonia Gandhi, married to her daughter Priyanka. But he prefers being known as a businessman.

Varda is a fashion designer and has his business Artex set up in Moradabad – an area known for imitation jewellery.

He believes India’s handicraft industry has the edge over China because Indian products are of a higher quality. Most items are hand-made and the sector employs about six million people. He also points out that labour standards in India are higher than those in China.

Vadra does not yet export his fashion to South Africa but is keen to explore possibilities.

He said African concepts like animal prints and bright colours had inspired him and he had incorporated them into some of his work.
