Durban University of Technology vice-chancellor and principal Professor Ahmed Bawa has resigned, to be with his family in Johannesburg.

Spokesman Alan Khan said in a statement that Bawa had indicated his resignation had been influenced “by his personal, family circumstances”.

“We did try to convince him to stay and complete his second term of office as Vice-Chancellor but his need to be reunited with his family in Johannesburg is understandable,” Khan said.

“The University Council will be ensuring that a recruitment process for a new Vice-Chancellor will commence within the next two weeks. DUT thanks Prof Bawa for his visionary leadership and commitment towards our students, staff and alumni.

“Professor Bawa leaves DUT in a better condition and position after his five-and-a-half years. We are grateful for his role in steering our University over the last five-and-a-half years.”
