What do you get when you give someone with a sense of humour an internet connection and editing software? You get one of the most-liked Facebook pages on Indian culture in South Africa.

Between making memes and picking on his culture, the young man behind South African Indian Trolls and Memes is proudly Indian.

The 21-year-old marketing graduate has gone big on the internet after he single handedly started the Facebook page in 2013.

Talking to POST, he said he never thought the page would get the attention it has.

“In the first week it had already received 4 500 likes and people were talking about it at family functions,” he said.

Two years on and he celebrated his 44 000th like on Facebook last week, and is hoping to reach 50 000 before the end of the year.

He said he had always thought himself to be funny so running the page was second nature.

“I am the joker in the family so I thought, why not localise memes and get people to laugh via Facebook,” he said.

He has taken the typical troll meme found on the internet, added hair, brown skin and a gold tooth. The page also boasts unique memes created and contributed to by followers of the page.

One of the common jokes to come up on the page is that when you are looking for ice cream, you often find Gadara beans instead.

He said he enjoyed the page mostly because he was able to provide a service through the page.

“People are often having a tough day, and when you go through Facebook there is so many negatives that come up. I know I am able to make people smile when they scroll past my posts.”

His identity is known to POST but few others.

“I stay anonymous because I am just a normal person who isn’t doing this for the fame, and at the beginning I felt people wouldn’t follow the page if they knew who I am,” he said.

He said he was considering revealing his identity at some point but not any time soon.
