MTV’s latest baby, MTV Choice, aired yesterday for the first time. Bubbly presenters Roxy Burger and Sade Gilliberti brought us the freshest news about what’s going on in the local entertainment industry.
The pair of party-heads headed out to OppiKoppi which was an epic way to start a show of this genre. We caught up with the hosts to find out how they were doing on the show.
“Why wouldn’t you want to be part of all this?” asked Burger.
“It’s MTV and it’s an awesome hybrid of magazine, lifestyle, entertainment and chart show, and your co-host is one of the coolest presenters in the country. It’s an obvious yes,” she said.
Gilliberti shared her sentiments.
“The universe presenting this awesome opportunity to be a part of the MTV family. Who would say no? MTV is the coolest brand on the planet,” she said.
While we are happy for them, you and I know there is a plethora of entertainment shows on TV already, so we had to ask the two what separated this one from the rest.
“Firstly, it’s a viewer-generated chart show,” said Burger. “Many shows dictate to the viewer, but here the viewer dictates to us. Also, we’re on location and not studio-based, which for me means that it’s a lot more ‘real’ than the average show.”
Gilliberti agreed, and said the viewers chose what they wanted to see by voting for their top 10 videos on the MTV website.
“It’s their countdown, their choice, it’s their MTV,” she said.
Looking back on the work done so far, we asked them how their experiences had been and if their personalities gelled.
“I think the chemistry between Sade and I is amazing, even if I say so myself,” said Burger.
“We have been friends for so long and both of us are hell-bent on being true to ourselves on TV. This show encourages us to simply be ourselves. We had so much fun at OppiKoppi, it was crazy cool.”
Gilliberti said the show looked “a lot better than in theory”, and the biggest bonus was working with her best friend.
“I love the energy of the show and the fact that even though we are so different, myself and Roxy are actually so awesome together. We also have a fantastic team behind us and that makes for better shoots,” she said.
While everyone and their uncle might love entertainment, this show is for a specific target audience. “This show is for students. From high school students to varsity students. Heck, even the everyday worker bee is going to love this show. If you love pop culture you’ll love MTV Choice,” said Gilliberti.
Although the two hosts have done TV presenting from very early stages of their lives, they feel that they have never done anything remotely close to this show.
“MTV Choice is different from the previous show I presented in that I’m not being put in a box. I am free to be me. I think it’s a natural evolution for me. I love fashion, I love pop culture, I love music, so when I am on the show I am not pretending. This is genuinely who I am. Also, I live, eat, sleep and breathe social media,” Burger said.
Gilliberti agreed, saying that the channel never disappointed when it came to churning out new shows.
“It’s MTV, it’s very different purely because of the brand,” Gilliberti said. “Plus I’m a VJ now, I’ve never been a VJ and I’ve always wanted to be one.”
• MTV Choice airs on MTV, (DStv Channel 130) at 4.40pm.
