Bad boy popstar Chris Brown is in the firing line once again.

The singer is being sued by one of the five people injured during a shooting at a party Brown hosted in January.

Paul Briley, a 22-year-old college student, claims Brown and the Fiesta Nightclub in San Jose are to blame for the incident in which five people were hit by bullets. Briley was shot in the foot. None of the injuries suffered in the incident were life-threatening.

Lawyers for Briley insist that the organisers of the event should have known that there was a high probability of violence because of Brown’s history. To support their argument, they listed a number of shootings, stabbings and fights related to Brown, and even raised his 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna.

They further contend that organisers should have conducted gun searches on ticket holders.

“'From 2009 to 2015, Brown's reported public appearance were marked by violence, establishing a reasonable likelihood of violence at Brown events and confirming the hallmark of a Brown event would foreseeably be a wake of violence, guns and/or shootings,” says the lawsuit.

Cellphone footage of the event shows Brown in a jovial mood, talking on the microphone, when suddenly he recoils as shots ring out. The singer’s security detail then leapt into action, ushering him to safety.

Briley is suing Brown and the Fiesta club to recoup lost earnings and medical expenses, as well as for “past, present, and future physical, mental and emotional pain and suffering, including fright, shock, terror, and post-traumatic stress of being shot”.
