GIG OF THE WEEK

The Parlotones

Pretoria National Botanical Garden (Sunday)

IF YOU survive Joburg Day and are still up for more partying, then check out The Parlotones who will be performing at the Old Mutual Music in the Gardens series at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden.

This gig marks the the group’s first performance since lead singer Kahn Morbee’s operation on his vocal chords to remove polyps so you’ll have to be patient if Giant Mistake doesn’t sound like it usually does.

The Parlotones have done pretty well over the years and this show will be like a “greatest hits” affair where we can all sing along. From Colourful to Push Me To The Floor, there will be no limit to the amount of fun and memories.

One thing that is not clear, however, is how much of Morbee’s new material we will hear since he is on a solo path these days. It would be great to hear what the lead singer’s solo project, Milk, sounds like.

Supporting The Parlotones will be up-and-comer, Naming James, who has graced the Old Mutual Music In The Gardens stage before to great delight of all show goers.

• Gates to the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens open at 11am and the music starts at 1pm. Tickets are available in advance on the Old Mutual Music in the Gardens Facebook page or at the gardens from R120. Tickets will cost R150 on the day of the concert.

JOBURG DAY

(AKA, LCNVL, VAN COKE KARTEL, DJ KENT, BEATENBERG and more)

Crocodile Creek Polo Club Joburg (tomorrow)

Coinciding with the lovely spring weather is the Joburg Day Festival which is an annual event for all those who want some fun in the sun.

In the past, the likes of Lloyd Cele, Elvis Blue and The Parlotones have put on memorable performances on the Joburg Day stage. Last year, David Hasselhoff came out to celebrate the day, while Baywatch and Knight Rider fans had a ball.

This year the line-up includes the likes of AKA, Lcnvl, Van Coke Kartel, DJ Kent, Beatenburg and many more.

AKA has just released his second album, Levels, which is doing very well on the charts. He features other prominent rappers like KO, Da Les and Reason. It’s something out of a Lil’ Wayne studio, yet it maintains its South African flavour.

DJ Kent is obviously riding on the success of his hit Pluto (Remember You) which features Beatenberg. Since Beatenberg will be part of the line-up too, it’s obvious they will perform the hit song together.

Look out for acts like Pascal and Pierce, Mafikizolo, Prime Circle and Mi Casa. – Munya Vomo
