TINKER BELL AND THE PIRATE FAIRY BLU RAY

***

From fairies to pirates, all the way to Skull Island.

FILM: When dust keeper fairy Zarina (voiced by Christina Hendricks) goes too far with her pixie dust experimentations, she exiles herself to Skull Island, where she promises to make pirate James’s (voiced by Tom Hiddlestone) ship fly.

Tink and her friends go after Zarina and they all eventually have to work together to stop the pirates from making off with the all important blue pixie dust.

The Tinker Bell films have done so well because they are so detailed, both in theme and visual composition. The stories draw on complicated life lessons as opposed to, say the flat Barbie films that are about how gorgeous Barbie is.

Here the fairies have to learn to work together and the story also touches on forgiveness, a lesson even adults struggle with.

BONUS FEATURES: Second Star to the Right: The Legacy of Neverland is director Peggy Holmes, writer Jeffrey Howard and producer Jennifer Magee-Cooke, talking about how they expanded Neverland to get the fairies to the pirates and Skullrock. After all, we first met Tinker Bell at the side of Peter Pan, so how did she get there?

Croc-u-mentary is a documentary about crocodiles.

Included is also an old-school Mickey Mouse short entitled Staying Cool plus the sing-along songs are exactly that.

The two animated shorts are clips of the fairies hanging out on the beach, while the Pixie Hollow Bake-off is a short film featuring the fairies vying to bake for Queen Clarion’s arrival day. Think reality fairy show of baking fairies versus non-baking fairies.

The Making of the Frigate That Flies is about the song in which the pirates sing about all the places they want to pillage. Tom Hiddlestone talks about voicing ambitious James who will eventually become Captain Hook and Carlos Ponce (who voices Bonito) talks about how much fun they had working in the Disney Studios. – Theresa Smith
