This is a space epic, not a superhero story.

FILM: A gun-toting raccoon who answers to Rocket, a walking plant named Groot, an Earthling who styles himself StarLord but is really called Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), a green-skinned alien assassin master named Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Dave Bautista impressing as Drax the Destroyer.

This film is the crazy story of how they meet and become the guardians of an entire galaxy. It’s a thrill ride of an action film, and expect some character development too. The story has lots of heart, the jokes are well-timed and all the more funny for it.

As zany as its source comic book material, the film works as a stand-alone, but will probably get a sequel because of the box office response.

SPECIAL FEATURES: The Gag Reel is expected (though the dance off is appreciated), while the deleted and extended scenes are of interest, though they do not contain anything earth-shatteringly new.

Audio commentary from director James Gunn is detailed but the three featurettes are most interesting.

The Guide to the Galaxy with Gun features the director talking about creating the visual look and incorporating colour into the designs, basically highlighting the degree of specificity which went into creating the film’s reality.

Knowhere features actor Benicio de Toro talking about the Collector’s influence on the film.

The Intergalactic Visual Effect of Guardians of Galaxy gives you a glimpse of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper who voiced Groot and Rocket. The Exclusive Look at Marvel’s Age of Ultron are scenes from the trailer – including Joburg cops being flung around downtown. – Theresa Smith
