Los Angeles - Giovanni Ribisi will join Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin in “The Gangster Squad,'' a police drama set in Los Angeles during the 1940s.

The Warner Bros. project is based on a series of Los Angeles Time articles recounting efforts by local law enforcement to keep East Coast gangsters out of the city. ''Avatar'' veteran Ribisi will play a police officer.

Ruben Fleischer (''Zombieland'') is directing from an adaptation by “L.A. Rex'' author Will Beall. Deadline first reported the news. - Reuters
