At Any Price
The stuff a MasterCard couldn’t buy.
At Any Price has all the trappings of a predictable family drama. The father, Henry Whipple (Dennis Quaid), has built a family business. The son, Dean (Zac Efron), wants nothing to do with the family business. There is tension. Then a potential tragedy brings father and son together and all is well with the world again. Except, where the run-of-the-mill family drama would have family businesses like law firms and grocery stores, the Whipples are into the agriculture business. And Dean fancies himself a racing driver.
As if these careers weren’t weird enough, the off-kilter chemistry between Efron and Quaid is also weird. Kim Dickens, who plays Henry’s wife, Meredith, is a timid woman with a lot of patience, but she becomes cardboard-flat in the family setting.
This Ramin Bahrani-directed movie has enjoyed screenings at the Toronto Film Festival and even SxSW so the stars of the film have managed to draw some attention to the movie, but it’s the not-so-subtle message that one can’t place a value on family that might keep people watching.
