Find the perfect dress for every occasion...
FILM: Like the main character the film is glib, overly smart and oh-so terribly cool, but Robert Downey jr is the one person who can pull it off.
This third Iron Man film gives us more of the Stark character when his home is destroyed and he has to go back to basics to figure out what is going on, while his suit is on charge… but then the film also goes into total overdrive with more than 20 new suits on display.
Downey jr is at his best when he is delivering Shane Black’s droll lines and the film explores the anxiety-inducing side of being a superhero, which is different, to say the least. But, then everything goes pear-shaped and explosions and mayhem ensues, so that side never really gets resolved.
Fanboys were critical of the way Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin character was nowhere near as complex as the comic book character, but if you only know Iron Man through the films, you won’t honestly care.
Kingsley is a delightful surprise, but between him and Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian the bad guys don’t quite stack up and, face it, a hero can only be as good as the film’s villain is bad. Still, Rhodey (Don Cheadle) gets a chance to show he doesn’t need the suit to be the hero, while Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) finally gets in on the action.
It is witty and funny and works well when we see the man behind the suit, but The Avengers kicked it up a huge notch so now we’re missing all the repartee between the costumed heroes.
SPECIAL FEATURES: The Blu-Ray disc features the 15-minute movie Agent Carter, which could actually give rise to an entire movie on its own.
The film can also be viewed with audio commentary from director Black and writer Drew Pearce, and there are plenty of deleted and extended scenes which demonstrate the amount of ad-libbing done by Downey jr.
The gag reel is so-so, but the best part is the various featurette which deconstructs specific scenes, takes us behind the scenes and also gives an exclusive look behind the scenes of Thor 2: The Dark World.
