Let’s get something out of the way: I love Bruce Willis (pictured above). Who doesn’t? Of all the action movie icons, who include Stallone and Schwarzenegger, Willis has got to be the coolest.
That said, after a while the cool guy act can become stale and you wish he played a role that doesn’t remind you of Die Hard.
Sadly, this is not the case in the second Red instalment.
In the first film we saw Willis star as retired CIA agent Frank, who could not let go of his old, dangerous life.
He unintentionally roped in a call centre girl, Sarah (Mary Louise Parker), into his 007 life and soon they become inseparable.
The second instalment takes over where the first left off, as Frank and Sarah try to live an honest life. Only three or so minutes into the film, several red flags show that this dream will not come true.
Soon we are on another global rollercoaster ride as the two team up with their friend Marvin (Malkovich) and end up chasing mad adversaries who plan to bomb different cities.
Anthony Hopkins takes on a role you would never associate him with, as a comical doctor who has lost his mind. It is far removed from The Silence of the Lambs and not as chilling, but you still get to enjoy his brilliant acting.
On the same point, the ever-serious John Malkovich also comes up with some interestingly witty retorts that shows yet another dimension to him.
If you loved the cool car chase scenes in the first films then you ain’t seen nothing yet, because there is one that involves the sexy Zeta-Jones that will blow your mind.
And that is just a drop in the ocean of cool action scenes in this film.
In fact, that is what saves an otherwise dud of a story. You get machine guns that can slice a vehicle into two. Then there are martial arts sequences with experts that will make Bruce Lee seem like a student.
It is a mixed bag of cool guy things that will keep you glued, but once the movie is over, you are not really going to bother watching it a second time.
If you like Red, Die Hard 4.0 and The Bourne Ultimatum then you will like this.
