Los Angeles - Austria's Christoph Waltz won the best supporting actor Golden Globe on Sunday for his role in Quentin Tarantino's blood-spattered spaghetti Western tribute Django Unchained.
Waltz, who plays a dentist-turned-bounty hunter, beat Alan Arkin in Argo, Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master, Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln and his Django Unchained co-star Leonardo DiCaprio for the first prize of the night.
The actor, who previously worked with Tarantino on 2009's Inglourious Basterds as a Nazi officer, opens the film by freeing Jamie Foxx's title character from a slave dealer.
The pair then embark on a string of bloody killings to secure bounties, before Waltz's character Dr King Schultz agrees to help Django rescue his wife from brutal Mississippi plantation owner Calvin Candie, played by DiCaprio.
Django Unchained was also up for best film and best director, the winners of which were to be announced later in Sunday night's show. - AFP
