Give Me the Simple Life
Last week’s column featuring Bill Evans’s straight-ahead jazz album created a stir. Many readers hunger for that Sixties jazz. The good news is that Joe Alterman has released an album in similar vein.
His Give Me the Simple Life CD will, to some extent, satiate the hunger for jazz in the 1960s genre.
The tracks include: Georgia on my Mind; An Affair to Remember; They Say it’s Spring and I’m Yours.
The musos are: Alterman (piano), James Cammack (bass), Healin Riley (drums) and Houston Person (tenor sax).
Mature jazz fans will love this CD!
Viva Duets CD/DVD
Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born August 3, 1926. You know him as Tony Bennett, the Italian-American singer of many genres including jazz. Bennett is also a serious and accomplished artist painting under the name Anthony Benedetto. A number of his works are on permanent display in several institutions.
He is also the founder of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in New York City.
Bennett began singing at an early age in New York. After he developed his popular singing technique, he signed with Columbia Records and had his first No 1 popular song with Because of You in 1951. It was all go from then on and in 1962, he recorded his signature song, I Left My Heart in San Francisco.
Like almost all of the singers at this time, his career and personal life suffered an extended downturn during the height of the rock music era.
Bennett staged a remarkable comeback in the late 1980s and 1990s, putting out fresh albums while maintaining his old musical style. This album, Viva Duets, is the third in a series. The first two, Duets and Duets II achieved platinum sales.
This CD/DVD album showcases, among others, these popular titles: The Best Is Yet To Come – with Chayanne; The Way You Look Tonight –with Thalía; Steppin’ Out with My Baby – with Christina Aguilera and Who Can I Turn To? – with Gloria Estefan.
Bennett at 85 is nowhere near the Bennett of the 1960s, but he certainly has fun with his guests and obviously is enjoying life.
