The monthly Boogie Boutique hip hop parties have a special treat for heads this month. Cap-City-Rap-City’s own Flex Boogie (pictured) will be the headlining act at the do that will be held at Bree Street Studios on October 26.
Previous Boogie Boutique events have seen the likes of Whosane and DJ Kenzhero headline a line-up that included some cool local DJs. And just in case you’re wonder- ing, the rapper didn’t score the gig just because he shares one name with the event which is run by a Cape Town collective called The Writers Bench.
In fact, “I’ve been talking to the organisers about doing my album showcase there for a while now as I have been follow- ing what they do with Boogie Boutique for months.”
The album that Flex Boogie, who was once a member of the rap outfit, Ba4za, is referring to is his debut, The Greatest Sellout, which is due for release next month.
“The theme of the album is love and loving and losing that love,” Flex Boogie explains. “It’s about building yourself up from that.
“On the album, there is this ambition to win and an aspiration to be better than yesterday. It’s more introspective because I go into my life stories. But I also take it back to the late Eighties and early Nineties in that the music is not disco ,but disco-inspired.”
Artists like N’Veigh and Black Lez of The Anvils are featured on “a very Cap City- street kind of song” while Ras and a few of the Muzart members handled the production side.
Although it garnered some buzz, When We Were Kings, Flex Boogie’s conceptual collaboration project with fellow former Ba4za member, Maliq, has been put on hold. Flex Boogie has, instead, taken to concentrating on his live gigs with his band, The Pastor’s Kids.
This band not only has a cool name, but they have been enhancing the rapper’s stage presence. But for the Boogie Boutique showcase of The Greatest Sellout, Flex Boogie will perform with Ras on the decks in what he terms a “tag team-style that allows a lot of interaction with the crowd.”
