Spring Day wouldn’t be Spring Day without the Spring Day Music Explosion. This year the first one takes place at Ga-Rankuwa at Bundu Inn. The five-date event then moves to Bloemfontein, Rustenberg, Polokwane and ends off in Mbombela at the end of October.
The organisers are Pepsi and Mahoota, who also use the dates to launch and celebrate their new albums.
Artists performing live this year include HHP, Spikiri, Big Nuz and Black Motion. Black Motion will be bringing tribal drumming to their DJ set while Doctor Malinga will bring his unique arabesque dancing to the event. Look out for Professor, who is currently recording a new album at Kalawa Jazmee, as well as Magesh who has clawed his way back to the top of the kwaito pile.
DJs scheduled to play for the 10 000-strong crowds include Oskido, Christos and Vinny da Vinci. Mahoota is also bringing his favourite international DJs, Ralf Gum and Rocco, for the big occasion. Tira, Ganyani and Zinhle complete the line up.
For the first time, tickets will be sold through Computicket. Standard tickets are R120 and VIP tickets are R300. Gates open at 10am until 6am the next morning.
Sponsors include Translux, the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, SABC1 and SABC Radio.
Last year the 10th anniversary of the event saw the tour visit all nine provinces and bring a host of international acts, among them Tortured Soul, Monique Bingham and Cabo Snoop.
Some of the takings went to corporate social investment activities in an effort to give back to the communities. This included supporting Meadowlands pensioners who use their pensions to feed Aids orphans. Earlier this year food parcels were given to orphans at Ellis Park. These activities will be continued and others taken on as well.
