THE SPIRIT INDESTRUCTIBLE
Nelly Furtado has nothing to prove.
Fans should be excited to listen to The Spirit Indestructible. But shock sets in on track three and you think you’ve popped in the wrong CD.
There is strong evidence that Nelly is trying too hard to fit into the YMCMB (Young Money Cash Money Billionaire) era so her sound is now compromised. She is so confusing in her sound that you overlook potentially good songs.
Look out for Waiting For the Night. It starts as a ballad which then turns into a dance tune. Parking Lot will have you fooled that you are in familiar territory. Bucket List never takes off. Something is an attempt to go back to the Timbaland sound, but it feels like bass beats on steroids with barely audible vocals.
Don’t Leave Me is a reggae track, but adds to the confusion. End Game hints at where Furtado’s career is headed if she pursues the Pink Friday sound. – Munyaradzi Vomo
