The Tony Rich Project: Speak Me
Richer Than Mature Wine.
OKAY, Tony Rich is a one hit wonder to the rest of the world, but to his true fans he is still a force to be reckoned with. A lot has happened since his Grammy Award-winning hit, Nobody Knows. However, unlike the so-called mainstream R&B artists that currently rule the charts, Rich’s sound remains the way it was in the Nineties. We start off this “project” with the title track Speak Me, which is a sultry slow jam.
What makes Rich’s sound work is that it is reminiscent of that of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. They sing in an identical manner and you wish there was a Watch The Throne-like collaboration from the two.
The Light comes second and like Speak Me, the song is a ballad that hero worships the love of a woman. Rich also says just how much he misses his woman in Feels Like Winter.
As usual, to those who are familiar with the man’s music, nothing is really obvious about his songwriting. Breaking Glass, for instance, doesn’t give away in the title that he plans to have an intimate meeting with his love interest. This is not Grammy material, but Chris Brown and his peers can learn a thing or two about the basics of R&B. – Munya Vomo
