Frans Room is an artist who knows a thing or two about the sweet taste of success. The producer and DJ, who is more widely known as Alle Farben, has come a long way from being known as a confectioner, among other odd job titles.
In the past couple of years, the electronic musician’s star has been on the rise. Not only has he broken out of being a young hero of his hometown, Kreuzberg in Berlin, Germany, but he’s played gigs as far as Tel Aviv. When I caught up with him, the 28-year-old with a baby face was gearing up to play at the MS Dockville Festival in Hamburg.
Before thousands flocked to the stage he was due to play at, Alle Farben told me that he hasn’t become used to throngs of music lovers geeking out over his sets that range from deep house to dubstep and everything in between.
“Gigs like that I find very emotional,” he says. “Last year I played at the former Tempelhof airport in Berlin and 38 000 were there. So many things have changed in my career that these performances become a good reason for me to go into the studio and create a song.”
Although Alle Farben has quite a few original compositions, he’s also made a name for himself by releasing remixes of other people’s songs. For instance, his remix of Youth by Daughter has earned him many fans. But so has his odd name.
Alle Farben is actually German for “all colours”. Being a visual artist as well – his brother makes most of his single/mix/podcast art – it’s not so far-fetched for this musician to have that colour component to his overall art.
He explains his name: “I started out making art and was always inspired by art and colour.
“Another big inspiration for me was a German artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and a lot of my paintings were like his with all the colours. So then I called myself One Hundred Colours but when DJ-ing stopped being a side project and I spent more time at it, I changed my name to All Colours – Alle Farben.”
To date, all of his podcasts are given titles that have something to do with colour. Like Glacial Blue, Lupine Orange and Sunflower Yellow. Alle Farben also tries to give his fans more than the gift of good music.
Often, he hands out balloons before his set. Anything that is bright and makes a statement.
“From time to time, I change what I give out,” he says. “It’s just something I started doing and it blew up because people share what I give them with others. And that’s it, man. That’s all I want.”
