IT is known as the world’s leading dance event and it’s coming to South Africa this weekend. For those who have been living under a rock, I am referring to Sensation – Innerspace and it will take place at the Coco-Cola Dome in Joburg on Saturday.
To date, 80 Sensation shows have made waves worldwide and attracted more than a million visitors in about 20 countries. So if that’s anything to go by, you won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind dance experience.
The line-up includes Berlin-based DJ and producer, Thomas Gold; one the UK’s finest exports in electronic music, Nic Fanciulli, DJ duos Daniel and Juan Sanchez, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano (Holland) and Swedish DJ and electronic music producer (EDM), Mr White, who will open the event.
In an exclusive interview with Tonight, Dutch DJ Thomas Gold shares his thoughts on playing at Sensation in South Africa. We chat via Skype and Gold could not be more charming. For a minute, it slips my mind that I am chatting to one of the world’s leading EDM professionals.
Describing his sound as “energetic and uplifting”, Gold’s sets comprise house, trance progressive house and tech house. With a string of smash hits in recent years, he has played the world’s foremost clubs and festivals. And who can forget his majestic remix of Lady Gaga’s Judas as well as Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain which received 14 million (and counting) views on YouTube.
Chatting about the event Gold says: “I’m super excited about it. I have never played Sensation before and never been to South Africa. But I’ve heard a lot about Sensation and I’m really excited. I can’t wait to come over and party with you guys,” he says.
Gold reveals he is constantly evolving as a DJ: “I’ve gone through a couple of style changes. I have my personal characteristics and signature sounds and I tend to use the same type of sound, but I’m growing and still developing stuff I’m doing. Also, I’m looking at what’s going on and I let myself be inspired when I go out. I listen to other DJs and go to clubs with different kinds of music. I just try to keep changing and keep evolving.
“But I think it’s important to just be yourself. Keep your own style and be open to any changes. Don’t let yourself be influenced by what’s going on, stick to your style and core ideas. It’s very important to develop your style all the time and that’s what I’m doing.”
What’s the secret to his success? How does Gold keep his style fresh and unique? According to the artist, it’s all about giving the audience the best time of their lives.
“When I play for them and they’re in front of me at a festival, I don’t just want to play a couple of tracks, but rather I want to do a little show. I play a little of my own stuff and tracks I haven’t released as yet, and if I play tracks by other people, I mostly edit those tracks; I mash them up or change them or remix them for myself.
“I always see my set as a journey, a musical journey, whether it’s two hours or longer. I just want to create a kind of story when I’m playing a set and basically every song I play is a version that I fit into my needs and into my set.”
Gold has this to say to his fans: “I can’t wait to see all you guys, to party with you. I will prepare a very special set for you so you better be ready for a big party. I think we’re going to have a great time.”
