GIG OF THE WEEK

Wishbone Ash

Live – the Venue (tonight)

Mamas

Durban ICC (tomorrow)

THIS weekend, Durbanites are spoilt for choice as amazing entertainment is offer with two awesome gigs going down. Tonight, British rock band, Wishbone Ash, perform at Live – the Venue. During an interview, singer and guitarist of the band, Andy Powell, said they are really excited about their South African tour.

“We toured there a couple of years ago, opening for Deep Purple, and had an amazing time soaking up the culture and performing. We received a really warm and great reaction,” he shares.

Since their inception in 1969, Powell says their music has always evolved: “The band’s ethos is the same, but we’ve never been afraid to take risks and try new approaches. We’re not complacent. Having said that, the blueprint we laid down was very strong – the melodic content in our music, the twin lead guitar concept. It’s stood us in good stead. This band is a very tight unit, musically.”

On their gig tonight, the singer says they will play a varied set.

“It will include classic material, of course, from the 1970s Argus period, but also some selections from our entire 45-year catalogue including a taster or two from our most recent, very well received album, Blue Horizon,” he adds.

Besides Wishbone Ash to look forward to, tomorrow sees the MTV Africa Music Awards taking place at the Durban ICC. It features Anthony Anderson with a performance by Ne-Yo. Other acts include DJ Tira, Big Nuz, DJ Fisherman and more. – Valencia Govindasamy
