GIG OF THE WEEK

Back To The City

Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown (Monday)

Don’t you like the fact that Easter was just a few sleeps ago, but Monday is another public holiday? Once again you get to defer your Monday blues to another week.

Thanks to Freedom Day falling on Monday, most of us get to relax into what will be a long weekend.

The biggest gig lined up for those looking for something to do has to be the Back to the City festival which will be held in Newtown’s Mary Fitzgerald Square.

If hip hop is your thing then you will be excited to know that the hip hop community will converge at the square to celebrate talent.

The event, which celebrates its ninth year, is done in collaboration with Sprite Uncontainable. Basically, they travel around the country throughout the year in search of the most talented hip hop youngsters who will then battle it out at the finale, which happens on Monday.

One of the judges is rapper Reason, who has brought his skill to the event before.

Just like last time, he will also perform. And joining him on stage will be the likes of AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Khuli Chana, Kwesta and Riky Rick, to mention a few. There will also be a tribute piece for the late rapper Flabba by his group, Skwatta Kamp.

If you like DJ sets then you are in for a treat because DJs including Speedsta, Kenzhero, C-Live, Dimplez and Capital among others will also be in the vicinity.

There will also be a surprise international act among our own locals acts.

The last Back to the City event is believed to have attracted about 21 000 people and this year’s target is 25 000. – Munya Vomo

• If you want to be part of it then you will have to part with R160 for general access and R300 for presidential tickets.
